FADE IN:
INT. HILL VALLEY UNIVERSITY - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12 2005, 10:04 AM -- A CLASSROOM
An ANALOG CLOCK WALL is showing the time. We hear the voice of the
PROFESSOR (O.C.)
Alcubierre's warp is constructed...
We PULL AWAY to show the whole classroom, full of students. They are taking notes.
PROFESSOR BERFIELD, a plump grey-haired man, is giving a Physics lecture in front of a blackboard full of graphs and equations.
PROFESSOR (cont'd)
...of hyperbolic tangent functions
which create a peculiar distortion
of space at the edges of the
flat-space volume. New space
is created at the back side of
the moving volume, and existing
space is annihilated at the front side.
PROFESSOR'S POV
We SCAN the front row, looking at the students taking notes.
PROFESSOR (O.C)
This means that an object within
the volume of the warp will
receive a forward push...
We STOP in front of a STUDENT with longish brown hair, who is playing with a portable game system instead of taking notes. We will discover him to be JULES ERATOSTHENES BROWN, son of "Doc" Emmett Lathrop Brown.
PROFESSOR (O.C.)
(angry)
MISTER BROWN!
Jules switches off the console and looks into the camera.
JULES'S POV
Professor Berfield leans forward, toward us.
PROFESSOR
Mister Brown! If you're not
interested in this lecture,
can you at least pretend?
JULES AND PROFESSOR - FULL FIGURE
Jules puts the console on the desk.
JULES
I'm sorry, but you see, I
already know all of it!
The professor hands Jules a piece of chalk.
PROFESSOR
Well, then, would you mind taking
this chalk and giving the
lecture in my place?
Jules actually takes the chalk, gets up and goes to the blackboard! He clears his throat and starts making schemes on the blackboard.
JULES
Well folks, as our great teacher
was saying, an object within
the warp... will be pushed
forward by the expansion of the
space at its rear and the
contraction of the space at its front.
As you can see from this graph,
the amount of distortion, that
we will call "upsilon", is equal
to... minus alpha by the tensor of k.
The professor has sit down in the place of Jules.
JULES (O.C.)
(cont'd)
We can see that anything in this
zone will travel on a free-fall
geodesic...
CUT TO: EXT. UNIVERSITY COURTYARD
Everybody is coming out from the university to return home. Jules is among some of the students we saw before.
STUDENT #1
Great show, Brown!
STUDENT #2
You outsmarted that gasbag!
The students go in different directions. Some of them leave on foot, others get into their cars or on their motorbikes.
Jules approaches a slender, streamlined MOTORBIKE which looks a little too futuristic. He gets on, puts the key in, turns it and...
...we hear nothing. No "varooom" or anything else. After a second, a backlit display on the handlebar lights up, accompanied by faint electronic "blips". Jules disengages the kickstand, rotates the throttle and speeds away silently on his ELECTRIC MOTORBIKE, which goes
just as fast as a normal one!
CUT TO: INT. THE BACK ROOM OF A BAR
A blond 20-YEAR-OLD with a backpack on his back is sitting at a table, talking to a dark blond BURLY MAN in his late 30s. A pile of CD-Rs in slim boxes is on the table.
YOUNG MAN
This is the full romset... over
four thousand unique games!
BURLY MAN
And how much would it cost me?
YOUNG MAN
Ten bucks per CD, as usual...
260 bucks total!
BURLY MAN
Quite a lot, for a bunch of old
low-res games...
YOUNG MAN
This is an investment! Think
about all the money you'll make
when your customers get to play them!
BURLY MAN
Hmmm... yeah! Definitely! I'll
make gobs of money with a four
thousand games cabinet!
The burly man pulls out his wallet, counts 260 dollars and gives them to the young man, who takes them and puts them in his pocket, then he gets up from the table.
YOUNG MAN
Thank you... see you next week
for the MP3s! Keep the money ready!
The young man exits the room and enters the bar, which is not yet open to the public as it is still being whitewashed. He gets out from the bar to the street.
EXT - FRONT OF THE BAR
The young man comes out from the door of the bar, which is now a familiar sight... it's nothing but the CAFE' 80'S, that is about to open!
A big SIGN on the external window reads:
CAFE' 80'S: IT'S GONNA TAKE YOU BACK TO THE PAST! OPENS NOVEMBER 19.
The young man puts down his backpack, opens it and pulls out a HOVERBOARD!
He drops it on the sidewalk making it hover, puts his backpack on again, jumps on the
hoverboard, gives a few pushes with his foot and speeds away faster than the surrounding cars,
keeping a perfect control of it.
The BACK TO THE FUTURE THEME starts playing and the BACK 4 THE FUTURE logo appears, followed by
the opening credits, while we FOLLOW the young man as he RACES through the streets on his hoverboard, zig-zagging among the cars, until he reaches a two-floored house in the suburbs, surrounded by a garden.
The theme and the credits fade away as the young man jumps down from the hoverboard, picks it up and opens the gate, near which a MAILBOX can be seen.
THE MAILBOX
The label on it reads: BROWN, EMMETT L.. This means that the young man is VERNE NEWTON BROWN, Doc's younger son.
VERNE
unlocks the door and enters the house.
INT - DOC'S HOUSE
Verne enters the main room and lays his backpack on a chair.
VERNE
Mom! Dad! I'm home!
Nobody answers, but a DOG reaches Verne, wiggling its tail.
Verne pats its head.
VERNE
Hey Hawking!
VERNE
Followed by Hawking, he walks upstairs to reach his bedroom.
As Verne reaches his room, JULES approaches him.
JULES
Mom's out for shopping, Dad is
in the lab! What were you doing?
VERNE
(with a big grin)
You know, nothing 's like doing
business with Dirk Tannen!
Half of his father's brain and
ten times as gullible!
(a beat)
And you?
JULES
Just working on the chronovisor...
and updating the site!
(a beat)
(pointing Verne)
Deathmatch?
VERNE
(nodding)
Deathmatch!
Jules and Verne enter their rooms.
JULES'S ROOM
is the room of a young mad scientist. All kinds of unidentifiable devices he built himself are scattered everywhere, even on the desk where his computer is.
Jules sits at his computer and runs a first-person shooter. He picks up a pair of light goggles, connected to the computer, and puts them on. He then sets up a LAN deathmatch and picks up a peculiar H-shaped joypad to play.
VERNE'S ROOM
shows he is obviously a hardcore videogamer. He has a Doom 3 poster on the wall, a pile of gaming magazines near his bed and his computer is surrounded by tens of game CDs, many of which are not original. Verne runs the same first-person shooter and proceeds to join the game with the same kind of virtual reality goggles and controller that Jules used.
FADE TO: INT. BROWNS' HOUSE - NEXT DAY, 7:02
JULES
is working at his computer and the light of his screen is the only light in the house; an unseen electric engine is spinning.
VERNE
is sleeping.
DOC AND CLARA
are sleeping. Above their bed, a flat widescreen TV is mounted on the ceiling of their room. After a couple of seconds, we hear
JULES (O.C.)
YEEAHHH!!! I MADE IT!!!!
Doc wakes up abruptly, Clara is slower.
CLARA
(half asleep)
What's going on?
DOC gets out of the bed in his pajamas and reaches Jules's room. We follow him as he does it and we get another glimpse of Verne: he is pulling his pillow over his ears.
As Doc approaches Jules's computer, we finally see the invention he is testing: the CHRONOVISOR, which lies on his desk. It is formed by an electric ENGINE connected to a MISTER FUSION and a FLUX CAPACITOR mounted on top of a rack of unidentifiable tech gadgets, which is plugged into the back of the computer and has a WEBCAM connected in its top side.
THE COMPUTER SCREEN
displays three windows. The first one shows a 3D space formed by vectorial objects. The second one is a text window with nine text fields and a series of buttons. The last one looks like the output of a video camera... or the display of a first-person shooter without weapons.
JULES
(to Doc)
Look, dad!
Jules types in OCTOBER 26, 1985, 01:33:00 in the TIME fields of the window. He also inserts some numbers that TO US appear meaningless, in the XYZ fields. Immediately, the vectorial space and the first person view change to show the LONE PINE MALL in 1985, where the BTTF1 DELOREAN is about to go back in time, and does it just instants later, while the Lybians' VOLKSWAGEN VAN crashes into the kiosk.
DOC
(smiling)
Oh, I remember this!
Jules turns to the door.
JULES
VERNE! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!
INT. VERNE'S ROOM
Slowly, Verne gets up and reaches Jules's room.
INT. JULES'S ROOM, SOME MOMENTS LATER
Verne, now dressed in day clothes, approaches Jules's computer.
JULES
(excited, to Verne)
The chronovisor is finished!
Do you know what it means?
VERNE
(ironic)
That we'll see every football
match before anyone else?
JULES
No, it means now we can see any
event without physically travel
in time and without any risk of
disrupting the continuum!
Verne understands and opens his mouth in astonishment.
VERNE
Wow!
JULES
Look at this!
Jules types JUNE 23, 1990, 04:59:40 in the TIME fields and modifies again the contents of the XYZ fields. This time, the view on the computer screen changes to an abandoned RAILROAD in the middle of a wood.
JULES
Do you remember? It's when we
moved into the twentieth century!
Few instants later, Doc's TIME TRAIN appears on the tracks, after three SONIC BOOMS.
Jules clicks on the PAUSE button on the interface and starts moving around the view with the mouse and the keyboard. Everything that is displayed appears frozen in time, and Jules moves the viewpoint into the train, letting us see DOC, CLARA and younger JULES and VERNE (aged 7 and 5) sitting inside.
VERNE
Cool! Set it to 2050, I want
to see if Duke Nukem Forever
has come out!
Jules snickers and agrees.
JULES
Okay!
Jules types NOVEMBER 13, 2050, 07:10:00 in the TIME field, without changing the XYZ coordinates. Immediately, the current objects in the view are replaced by something completely unexpected: an orange CLOUD of flowing PLASMA that occupies the entire view.
Jules moves the viewpoint around, but the only visible change is the direction of the plasma flow. That thing is obviously immense.
VERNE
What the hell is that?
DOC
GREAT SCOTT!
JULES
What?
Doc points the XYZ coordinates.
DOC
Move UP and BACK a hundred
thousand light years!
Jules does it. The view changes to show an immense BLACK HOLE, with a PLASMA DISK around it about half a million light years across.
Jules moves the viewpoint around: no stars or galaxies can be seen. It looks like the only thing in existence is the black hole.
Jules gives Doc a blank stare.
DOC
Make a fast backtrack of the date!
Jules does it. The years can be seen retroceding: 2049, 2048, 2047... all the other time fields change so fast they cannot be read. The view does not change: the viewpoint is always framing the black hole.
Suddenly... BING! A warning window appears.
It reads: DECEMBER 21, 2012, 23:59:59 - INVALID DATE.
DOC
(muttering to himself)
Just as I thought...
(to Jules)
Resume the last coordinates,
go to December 20, 2012
and fast-forward the date!
Jules does it. The view of the black hole is replaced by the abandoned railroad, but some instants later...
BING! DECEMBER 21, 2012, 00:00:00 - INVALID DATE.
Jules faces Doc.
JULES
What does this mean?
DOC
It means that on December 21,
2012, a paradox will destroy
the universe.
Verne immediately turns to Doc, a blank look on his face. He wants to say something, but he gets agitated and looks alternatively to Doc and Jules.
VERNE
What does... Are you...
Is this a sick joke?
DOC
Unfortunately not.
(pointing to the computer)
Jules, can you show the field
equations for that instant?
Jules clicks on SHOW EQUATIONS AND GRAPH in the controls window. The vectorial space is replaced by a Cartesian GRAPH showing black X-Y AXES and a blue horizontal FUNCTION LINE which represents the degree of timeline deviation.
Jules proceeds to scale down the graph. As he does so, we can see that the horizontal line was not horizontal at all, but merely part of a set of curves forming a 27-year wide LORENZ ATTRACTOR.
The leftmost point of the attractor is at the end of 1985; the rightmost point at the end of 2012.
DOC
See this? A closed timelike curve
has been triggered. This will
cause an infinity loop of
contradictory events that will
culminate in the destruction
of the universe.
(a beat)
Now, what is the earliest point
in time influenced by the loop?
Jules zooms the graph enough to see it. It is OCTOBER 28, 1985.
JULES
Oh, man.
DOC
I suggest an on-field investigation.
A perfect opportunity to test
the new time machine.
Verne turns quickly towards Doc.
VERNE
It's finished?!
DOC
Yes.
Doc heads for the door.
DOC (cont'd)
Come to the lab, I'll show you
everything.
We FOLLOW Doc and sons as they go downstairs and reach a metallic DOOR equipped with an IRIS SCANNER with a flashing red LIGHT.
Doc looks through the iris scanner and the light becomes a steady green. After some mechanical NOISES, the door opens to a descending STAIR. The three walk down the stair and reach a large underground room. Doc throws a switch to turn on the lighs and reveal...
DOC'S NEW LAB!
Completely different from the chaotic garage of BTTF1, this looks really professional.
Across it, a series of complex MACHINERY can be seen and heard buzzing and bleeping faintly. A PC lies on a desk in a corner. On one side we see a RAMP large enough to let a car roll over it, with a closed heavy metallic DOOR at its end.
Finally, at the far end of the lab, we see what we were waiting for... THE NEW TIME MACHINE!
The moment is outlined by the first three notes of the BACK TO THE FUTURE theme refrain,
playing softly.
THE TIME MACHINE
is based on a modern silver-colored TOYOTA CELICA. It is equipped with gear that make it resemble the BTTF2 Delorean, except that the new Mr. Fusion is taller and thinner, and there are FOUR rectangular exhaust outlets behind it: two on the spoiler, the other two under it.
DOC, VERNE AND JULES
They are looking at the time machine.
Doc looks very proud of his creation. Verne is amazed; Jules looks perplexed and after a second he turns toward Doc.
JULES
It's... not a Delorean!
DOC
Of course not, it's a
Toyota Celica!
JULES
Why?
DOC
So many cars are better than a
Delorean. Don't tell me you're
already becoming a nostalgic!
Jules still looks unsure whether he likes the new time vehicle or not.
DOC
Come and see what I did to the
inside! You'll love it!
Doc unlocks the car doors with the remote control, then he opens the driver's door and sits in the driver's seat.
INSIDE THE TIME MACHINE
The level of miniaturization possible in 2005 gives it much less of a loony-factor than its 1985 counterpart. We notice a FLUX CAPACITOR between the two front seats and a 10-inch LCD touchscreen on the dashboard.
Doc presses a BUTTON on the edge of the screen. The screen switches on to a bright background with a stylish LOGO in the center:
ChronOS (R) v1.1
and the word LOADING just under it. After a couple of seconds, that word is replaced by the line:
PROCEED WITH LOGIN
DOC
This is the on-board computer,
the desktop is a touchscreen.
To log in, you need to look into...
Doc looks into another IRIS SCANNER nearby.
DOC (cont'd)
...the iris scanner.
Doc looks away from the scanner. On the screen, we see the words WELCOME EMMETT, immediately replaced by a graphic desktop with a series of icons.
DOC
Right now, it can recognize me
and both of you.
Doc indicates an icon on the desktop.
DOC (cont'd)
This is the time travel control
program. From here, you can set
a destination time and see a
complete database of every travel
you made. Of course it's empty now.
Doc indicates another icon.
DOC (cont'd)
This is a GPS navigation tool.
It won't work before February 1978,
so be careful and don't get
lost in the past.
Doc indicates a green gauge on the bottom of the desktop.
DOC (cont'd)
This is the power level. When
the bar is red, you need to
fuel Mister Fusion. Oh yes,
I replaced the internal combustion
engine with an electrical engine.
You don't want to stop travelling
when we run out of oil, do you?
Doc gets out of the car and turns to his sons.
DOC
Hurry! Get in and set your
destination! I'll follow your
movements through the chronovisor!
JULES
Aren't you coming with us?
DOC
Nobody was coming with me when
I was investigating Marty's
situation in 2015!
Jules enters the car and sits on the driver's seat; Verne sits on the front passenger's seat.
Jules double-taps the time travel control icon, activating the program.
THE TIME TRAVEL CONTROL PROGRAM
is a window formed by three rows.
The first row, marked DESTINATION TIME, is formed by a series of numbers and text, with arrows above and below them, forming a destination month, day, year, hour, minute and second.
The second row, marked PRESENT TIME, displays the current time with a green Arial font.
The third row is a conspicuous button marked SHOW TRAVEL DATABASE.
Jules sets the destination time: OCTOBER 28, 1985, 08:30 AM, then he turns the key. The electric engine comes to life. Verne opens the glove box, which contains, among other things, a roll of duct tape and a small remote control. He picks up the remote control and pushes a button.
THE EXIT RAMP
The time machine drives up the ramp and out to the garden.
THE TIME MACHINE - OUTSIDE
Its wheels rotate down 90 degrees and it lifts off. It accelerates to 88 and blasts to 1985, leaving behind two stripes of fire floating in the sky!
CUT TO: 1985 - EXT. AN UNTILLED AREA
The suburb where the Browns live in 2005 did not exist yet in 1985: all we see is a vast zone of wilderness. As we PAN across it, three SONIC BOOMS mark the arrival of the time machine.
THE TIME MACHINE - INSIDE
Jules is flying it down and towards a narrow trail.
VERNE
Now what?
JULES
We get a newspaper and take note
of anything weird. We must have
an eye for out-of-place or
out-of-sequence events, and
people involved.
EXT. NEAR THE TRAIL
THE POWER OF LOVE by Huey Lewis and the News starts playing.
The time machine lands on the trail and proceeds on wheels. It reaches a road to Hill Valley and joins the traffic.
EXT. HILL VALLEY STREETS
The time machine drives down the street, passing several familiar landmarks: the Burger King near Doc's garage; Lou's aerobic center; the high school; the clock tower...
Finally, the time machine turns into a street leading to the LONE PINE MALL parking lot.
THE TIME MACHINE
parks next to a 4x4 pickup truck that looks identical to Marty's. However, it does clearly NOT belong to Marty, since it has a large plastic sign on its left side:
ANOTHER GREAT OCCASION
FROM
STATLER TOYOTA
The song fades to silence as Jules and Verne get out of the car. They start approaching the mall, but Jules suddenly remembers something.
JULES
(stopping abruptly and turning back)
WAIT!
Verne stops and turns to Jules, who quickly reaches the plastic sign hung on the truck.
JULES
We don't want to attract any
attention! Help me to untie this!
Jules and Verne untie the sign off the truck.
JULES
(grinning)
Perfect!
Jules, holding the right side of the sign, walks towards the front-right corner of the time machine.
Verne, holding the left side, immediately understands his brother's plan and reaches the back-right corner of the car.
THE SIGN
Jules and Verne tie it to the right side of the time machine, making the time vehicle look like a fancy promotional item from the local car dealer.
JULES AND VERNE
enter the mall. The internal newsstand is immediately to their left, which allows Jules to swiftly pick up the latest HILL VALLEY TELEGRAPH and sneak away with indifference.
As soon as he glances the first page of the newspaper, he stops in his steps and shows it to Verne.
JULES
THIS IS IT!
THE NEWSPAPER
The main title on the first page is:
SPECTACULAR RAILWAY ACCIDENT
Under the title is a photo portraying the site where the Delorean was destroyed.
JULES (O.C.)
Someone must have found the
flux capacitor!
JULES AND VERNE - HALF FIGURES
VERNE
And built a time machine?
Jules nods.
JULES
And caused a paradox...
unless we prevent it!
Jules turns to face the exit.
JULES AND VERNE - FULL FIGURES
A grin starts forming on Verne's face.
VERNE
Hey... why hurry? We have all
the time we want! We might as
well take a tour of the mall!
(a beat)
Besides, we can't even interfere
with our existence!
JULES
Verne! why don't you think
scientifically?
VERNE
Okay! Scientifically: disprove
my statement!
JULES
Uhh...
VERNE:
Ha ha! You can't!
(patting Jules on his back)
Come on, let's go!
Verne heads for the inside of the mall and Jules quickly reaches him.
CUT TO: INT. MALL - SPORTS SECTION
Verne is trying to ride a 1980s skateboard: wide, big wheels, reinforced front, counterweight on the back.
Jules is looking at him.
VERNE
Man, this is heavy!
JULES
Getting into the mood of the
80s already?
VERNE
gets off the skateboard and picks it up.
VERNE
No, I mean... how could they do
tricks with this thing? It weighs a ton!
JULES
Maybe they didn't!
Jules looks at and points a rack full of quad skates.
JULES
Can you imagine, doing tricks with THOSE?
As they burst into laughter, we PULL AWAY to reveal the edge of the CHRONOVISOR screen first, then Doc sitting on Jules's chair. Doc is watching this very scene from 2005!
DOC
What are they doing? GOOFING OFF
instead of investigating?!
CUT TO: INT. MALL
Jules and Verne walk past the toys section, dominated by Masters Of The Universe action figures and Jem dolls. Something there attracts the attention of Jules: a TV is showing an episode of the old Masters Of The Universe cartoon.
JULES
(pointing the TV)
Hey, look at that!
Verne looks perplexed. Indeed, the animation of that cartoon is very low quality.
VERNE
Man, it looks like a Flash video!
A LITTLE BOY, accompanied by his grandmother, overhears the comment and gives what he believes to be an appropriate answer.
LITTLE BOY
It's not The Flash! It's He-Man!
Verne, surprised by the double meaning of that remark, smiles at him.
VERNE
Do you like it?
LITTLE BOY
Yeah! I already have 10 good
guys and 8 bad guys, Castle
Grayskull and the Snake Mountain!
(a beat)
I gotta collect 'em all!
Jules and Verne look at each other.
JULES
Some things never change!
CUT TO: INT. MALL - COMPUTER SECTION
Verne is looking at a white box containing an SG-1000 MK3, the Japanese version of the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM. Jules is nearby, looking at home computers and software that came on AUDIO CASSETTES.
VERNE
The original Japanese! I bet
it'd sell for a grand on eBay!
JULES
Just like this RARE, MINT Apple 2!
VERNE
That's like, what? Two thousand
times less RAM than a Pocket PC?
This peculiar dialogue attracts the attention of the nearest SALESMAN, a young man who is (biologically) about their age. He stops in his steps to eavesdrop, unnoticed by Jules and Verne, who go on in their 20-year-too-early dissertation.
JULES
And yet you have the full romset!
VERNE
Only to make money out of it!
I'd never play with something
older than a Nintendo 64!
The last line is too much for the salesman. He enters the conversation.
SALESMAN
Nintendo 64! Oh my god!
Jules and Verne turn to the salesman, alarmed. Does he know what a Nintendo 64 is, in 1985????
The next words he says reveal this is not the case.
SALESMAN
All those big words, and you
can't tell a Nintendo Entertainment
System from a Commodore 64!
Verne decides to play a prank on him.
VERNE
(to Jules)
Should we tell him the truth?
Verne winks to his brother. Jules nods in response.
JULES
On the contrary, we know it very well!
VERNE
'Cause we're from the future!
SALESMAN
(not sure where this is going)
Really? And what's the future like?
JULES:
Let's see... The Twin Towers fell down!
VERNE:
The best rapper is white!
JULES:
The best golf player is black!
VERNE:
The Cubs won over Florida in 2003!
JULES:
The most popular TV show is
about 10 people locked together
inside a house!
VERNE:
And the governor of California
is Arnold Schwarzenegger!
The salesman bursts into laughter.
SALESMAN:
No way!!!
CUT TO: INT. MALL - MUSIC SECTION
The music section does not have any kind of anti-theft system at the entrance and is dominated by shelves full of audio cassettes by then-popular rockstars: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Van Halen, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi... there are also some shelves for vinyl records, which some young people are browsing without any embarrassment.
The internal radio is playing a certain SONG by Huey Lewis and the News. Jules and Verne arrive just in time to hear the final lyrics of the second verse:
Please don't drive at 88
Don't wanna be late again
So take me away, I don't mind
But you better promise me
I'll be back in time
Jules and Verne gasp and freeze right where they are. A song about TIME TRAVEL?!
They reach the local salesman.
JULES
Excuse me, what song is that?
SALESMAN
"Back in time", Huey Lewis and
the News. It came out a couple of...
JULES
(interrupting him)
Okay, thanks!
Jules and Verne walk away from the salesman.
JULES
(whispering)
We must examine that song! It
might be an effect of the paradox!
Jules and Verne reach the shelf marked with "H", looking for the cassette containing that song.
Verne finds it and POCKETS it as soon as the salesman looks away. They quickly LEAVE the music section.
CUT TO: EXT - LONE PINE MALL EXIT
Jules and Verne are coming out.
JULES
Let's go to the railway!
Jules and Verne run to the time machine, untie the sign from the side, throw it into the truck's trunk, enter the car and leave the parking lot.
CUT TO: EXT - AN ISOLATED STREET
The time machine takes off, directed to the railway near Hilldale.
THE TIME MACHINE - INSIDE
Jules is flying it. We reach, and fly over, Eastwood Ravine first, then the residential zone of Hilldale. Finally, we reach the spot where the train destroyed the Delorean. We stop and remain in stationary flight near a power pole nearby.
Instants later, something completely unexpected happens: a futuristic egg-shaped AIRCRAFT silently takes off from below us. As it reaches our height, a blue whirling PORTAL opens in front of it. The craft flies right into the portal, wich closes immediately after.
JULES
Damn, we're late! That was our answer!
VERNE:
Let's go back and bag the pilot
of that thing!
JULES:
We can't! We need a second purpose!
VERNE:
A what?
JULES:
If we go back and catch him now,
when our alter-egos reach this
place they won't see anything,
they won't go back and they
won't become us, which causes
the first problem because
we will have, in fact, gone back
and remained here at the same time.
(a beat)
If we just catch our man and
get back to 2005, our alter-egos
won't see him leave and won't
catch him; he'll be free to
leave, so we see him, decide to
go back... and so on, ad infinitum.
And that is the second problem.
VERNE
So what do you suggest?
JULES
We need a reason to go back
anyway, so we won't create a
paradox. A second purpose!
VERNE
(looking around outside the window)
We could uhh... we... we could...
JULES
(interrupting him)
I KNOW! Yeah, this MUST work! If
I'm right...
(looking at his watch)
...the time ripple should reach us...
right... NOW!!!
Outside the window, a closed letter envelope suddenly MATERIALIZES, stuck to the top of the pole with a piece of duct tape. Verne notices it.
VERNE
(pointing the letter)
HEY! What's that?
Jules sees where Verne is pointing and flies the car closer to the power pole. Verne pulls down the window and picks up the envelope. On its back side we read:
FOR J & V
Verne opens the envelope, extracts the letter and starts to read it.
VERNE'S POV
VERNE
(reading)
Dear Jules and Verne, you are
a bit late. You can get the crook
by going back to 8:12 AM.
HALF FIGURES OF JULES AND VERNE
VERNE (cont'd)
About your second purpose: after
you got him, you must copy this
letter word by word and stick your
version to the same pole where you found
this one. Then destroy this version.
Good luck...
(turning to Jules)
...JULES AND VERNE!!!
Jules and Verne look at each other.
JULES AND VERNE
EXCELLENT!!!
THE TIME TRAVEL CONTROL PROGRAM
Jules sets a new destination time: OCTOBER 28, 1985, 08:12 AM.
JULES (O.C.)
Let's go!
THE TIME MACHINE WINDSHIELD
We ACCELERATE to 88 and break the time barrier. We find ourselves in the same place, with the
sun a little lower and more eastward than before.
THE TIME MACHINE
LANDS and hides behind some bushes. A few instants later, a PORTAL opens in the air, from which the very same AIRCRAFT we saw before comes out. The aircraft lands, its left seagull wing door opens and out comes a long-haired bespectacled MAN dressed in a black suit, a white shirt and a futuristic belt.
The man approaches the railroad, where "something" is conspicuously missing. The man pushes a button on his belt, which projects a light beam on the railroad. A vectorial shape MATERIALIZES where the beam touches the ground, and SOLIDIFIES into the MISSING FLUX CAPACITOR!!!
INSIDE THE TIME MACHINE
Verne picks up the roll of duct tape from the glove box.
VERNE
LET'S BAG HIM!!!
Jules LIFTS OFF and accelerates towards the mysterious man, who had just turned to his aircraft.
THE TIME MACHINE
HITS the man on his head with the front bumper. He falls on the ground, unconscious. The time machine stops and lands. Jules and Verne come out.
VERNE
uses the duct tape to tie the man's hands and feet together.
JULES
Pass me the tape!
Verne does it. Jules uses the duct tape to blindfold the man, then they both LIFT him up and CARRY him to the back seat of the time machine.
JULES
starts UNTYING the man's futuristic BELT, which is kept together with Velcro. He puts it on.
VERNE (O.C.)
Who's gonna write that letter?
JULES
Well, that WAS your handwriting!
THE BELT
On its center, a small LCD SCREEN, currently displaying a spinning cigarette packet, is surrounded by buttons.
Jules PUSHES a button. Immediately, the small screen projects a beam of light toward the ground and creates a vectorial shape, which solidifies into a real cigarette packet, while the image on the display disappears.
Jules pushes another button. The belt emits the beam again, which hits the cigarette packet, DEMATERIALIZING it. On the display, the image of the spinning cigarette packet returns.
JULES
Fascinating...
JULES
walks to the futuristic aircraft, still parked nearby, and pushes the last button on the belt again. The whole aircraft DEMATERIALIZES!
THE BELT
Now, the display is showing a spinning image of the very same aircraft!
WIPE TO: A MINUTE LATER
Verne folds his version of the letter and closes the envelope.
Jules throws the original letter and envelope into Mr. Fusion. He gets into the car, lifts off and stops near the top of the pole.
Verne sticks his own version of the letter to the pole with a piece of duct tape.
INT. THE TIME MACHINE
Jules sets the new destination time: NOVEMBER 13, 2005, 08:00 AM
We start accelerating.
EXT. THE TIME MACHINE
